Introduction

UnSpend ("UnSpend," "we," "us," or "our") is an iOS app developed by Wilderstone that helps you track purchases you choose to skip — building savings awareness and financial discipline over time. This Privacy Policy explains what data UnSpend collects, how it is stored, and how it is used.

By using UnSpend, you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.


1. Information We Collect

1.1 Data You Enter Directly

When you use UnSpend, you provide the following information, which is stored entirely on your device:

  • Skipped purchase records: The dollar amount you chose not to spend, the category (e.g., Coffee, Dining Out, Shopping), an optional note, and the timestamp of the log entry.
  • Savings goals: Goal names, target amounts, custom emojis, and color preferences you set for each goal.
  • Goal allocations: Associations between specific skipped purchases and your savings goals.
  • Custom categories: Any custom category names, emojis, and colors you create beyond the built-in options.
  • User profile data: Your current daily and weekly skip streaks, your longest streak, your last log date, and your cumulative willpower score.

1.2 Location Data (Optional)

UnSpend includes an optional location-aware feature (Geo Prompts) that can send you a notification when you leave a nearby shopping location — such as a mall, department store, Target, or Walmart — to remind you to log any purchases you skipped. This feature requires background location access ("Always On" authorization via Core Location).

  • Location access is entirely optional and must be explicitly granted by you.
  • Location data is used only to detect proximity to shopping locations on your device. It is never transmitted to any server, logged, or stored beyond the in-memory state of the location manager.
  • You can revoke location access at any time in iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > UnSpend.

1.3 Information We Do NOT Collect

UnSpend does not collect:

  • Your name, email address, or any account credentials — there is no account system
  • Financial account numbers, bank details, credit card numbers, or payment information
  • Your actual spending transactions or data from any financial institution
  • Photos, camera, or microphone data
  • Contacts or address book information
  • Health or fitness data
  • Device identifiers sent to external servers
  • Crash logs or diagnostics sent to Wilderstone
  • Advertising identifiers

2. How Your Data Is Stored

2.1 On-Device Only

All data you enter into UnSpend is stored exclusively on your device using SwiftData (backed by SQLite). There is no server, no cloud sync, no login, and no data transmission to Wilderstone or any third party.

iOS encrypts the SwiftData database by default using AES encryption, tied to your device passcode. When your device is locked, this data is inaccessible to other apps and to us.

2.2 No Cloud Backup via UnSpend

UnSpend does not perform its own cloud backup. However, your device's standard iOS backup (iCloud Backup or local backups via Finder/iTunes) may include UnSpend's local database as part of the overall app backup. This is controlled entirely by your iOS backup settings, not by UnSpend.


3. How We Use Your Information

All data processing happens locally on your device. Specifically, UnSpend uses your data to:

  • Display your savings dashboard: Show cumulative savings totals for today, this week, and this month.
  • Track and animate goal progress: Calculate how much of each goal has been funded by your skipped purchases and celebrate milestone completions (25%, 50%, 75%, 100%).
  • Compute willpower scores and streaks: Maintain your current daily streak, longest streak, weekly streak, and willpower score based on your logging history.
  • Generate insights: Produce category breakdowns, day-of-week charts, time-of-day heatmaps, monthly summaries, and investment projections from your local purchase history.
  • Send local notifications: Schedule on-device reminders based on your notification preferences. These are generated entirely on your device and never transmitted externally.
  • Power geo prompts (if enabled): Monitor your proximity to shopping locations on-device and trigger a local notification to log a skip when you leave.

We do not use your data for:

  • Advertising, marketing, or profiling
  • Sale to data brokers or any third party
  • Analytics or crash reporting sent to Wilderstone
  • Any purpose beyond the features described above

4. Data Sharing

UnSpend does not share your data with any third parties. There are no third-party SDKs, analytics frameworks, advertising networks, or crash reporting tools embedded in the app.

4.1 User-Initiated Sharing

UnSpend includes a share feature that allows you to export or share a summary of your savings (e.g., your total saved amount or streak) via the standard iOS Share Sheet. Any sharing is entirely user-initiated and goes through your chosen app (Messages, Mail, etc.). Wilderstone receives no data from this action.

4.2 Legal Requirements

We may disclose information if required to do so by law or in response to a valid legal process, such as a court order or government request. Given that UnSpend stores no data on our servers, there is no data in our possession to disclose.


5. Data Retention and Deletion

  • On-device data is retained until you delete individual records within the app, reset your data from the app's settings, or uninstall the app from your device.
  • Deleting the app removes all locally stored data from your device immediately.
  • Because UnSpend stores no data on external servers, there is no additional deletion step required from Wilderstone's side.

6. Your Rights and Choices

6.1 Access and Correction

You can view, edit, or delete any individual skipped purchase, savings goal, or custom category directly within the app at any time.

6.2 Data Deletion

You can delete all your data by using the reset option in the app's settings, or by deleting the app from your device.

6.3 Notifications

You can enable or disable local notifications at any time through iOS Settings > Notifications > UnSpend, or within the app's settings screen.

6.4 Location Access

You can revoke location access at any time in iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > UnSpend. Revoking location access disables Geo Prompts but does not affect any other app functionality.


7. Children's Privacy

UnSpend is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Because all data is stored locally on your device and we collect no data on our servers, there is no data for us to delete. If you believe a child under 13 is using UnSpend on a shared device, you can delete the app or reset its data from within the app's settings.


8. California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to:

  • Know what personal information we collect, use, disclose, and sell.
  • Request deletion of your personal information.
  • Opt out of the sale of your personal information (note: we do not sell personal information, and we do not collect personal information on any server).
  • Non-discrimination for exercising your rights.

To exercise these rights or ask questions, contact us using the information in Section 9. Because UnSpend stores no data on Wilderstone servers, we have no personal data to produce or delete beyond what you can manage directly in the app.

10. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as the app evolves. We will update the "Last Updated" date at the top when changes are made. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Your continued use of the app after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
